by Adam Winfield, Writer, SAP Canada. It’s been interesting to observe the debate over whether there is -- or ever was -- any value in such roles as Chief Digital Officer or Chief Innovation Officer. IDC predicted in 2014 that Chief Digital Officers would have replaced 60 percent of CIOs in global organizations by 2020.
We’re halfway to 2020, and it’s unlikely that IDC’s lofty prediction will come true, as growth of CDOs has slowed heavily. People are asking why, but it really doesn’t matter whether the CDO hiring craze a decade ago was a panicked, quick-fix reaction to digital transformation -- or if the CDOs themselves shifted boardroom conversations and finally made things happen.
